Long before, women’s appearance in the theatre was rare and even frowned upon (we really mothered on our progress on women’s emancipation, right?), resulting to male actors adopting a feminine look to portray female leads. The term “drag” was coined in reference to how their dress dragged on the floor as they walked on stage but later became widely associate with men, mostly gays and queers, dressed in feminine clothing and makeup. Today, drag now encompasses transgenders and cishets that challenges gender norms and has traversed the socio-political realm. 

Drag gained even more traction in Vaudeville shows, and in the 1900s, mostly undertaken in underground bars, Drag has become an empowering tool for homosexuals to be unapologetic about their upbringing— especially after the surge of AIDS and the prejudices it created against the queerfolks.
