Pandemic Hobbies: Still Relevant in the Post-New Normal

The reality of the situation concerning COVID-19 is undeniable; we cannot disregard the fact that, at that time, we felt very helpless and thought that there was no end to it. In order to avoid social interactions and ensure safety, a lot of us have been confined to our houses, while others, particularly those who are employed, are restricted to their commutes to work and places. As a result of being separated for so long, we have missed out on time with friends and relatives and therefore have begun to suffer from mental health issues. Living through a pandemic for years has enabled numerous individuals to realise how much we need a hobby to help us get through every day. To combat feelings of loneliness and boredom or to simply divert their attention from the situation, people all over the world have engaged in or started exploring a variety of hobbies and interests. These hobbies are not only significant for maintaining good mental health during the pandemic, but they can also serve as support for us in these post-pandemic times.

One of these enjoyable hobbies is baking. Many people resort to baking pieces of bread and cookies to alleviate stress and loneliness during the pandemic. The time spent in the kitchen preparing a recipe from a cookbook is not only satisfying but also beneficial. A great way to bond with loved ones and have fun together can be through this pastime. Aside from this, technology has paved the way for other means of communication and entertainment throughout the lockdown, such as watching your favourite TV shows on Netflix. A movie night with your family or friends after a long day of work is a great opportunity to relax and spend more quality time together. Lastly, the hobby of exercising on a regular basis is known to have positive effects on both mental and physical health. Amid the lockdown, getting in shape again had become a goal for many people. Even in the post-pandemic era, anyone, regardless of age or physical capabilities, should make an effort to live a physically active lifestyle. Not only can having a consistent exercise program help us feel more in control of our days and provide an opportunity to connect with loved ones, but it is also, most importantly, valuable to our emotional and physical well-being.

Starting a hobby can make you feel better by diverting your attention from stressful thoughts. They provide a nice distraction from work while simultaneously stimulating your excitement for something new.
