The Environmental Impact of Transparent Face Masks

The Environmental Impact of Transparent Face Masks

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it a surge in the production and use of protective face masks. While face masks have become essential in preventing the spread of various viruses such as COVID 19, they also have unintended environmental spillovers due to the mass production it requires and the disposal that follows after. However, transparent face masks can provide a sustainable solution to remain protected from different illnesses whilst being significantly less environmentally harmful

Unlike traditional face masks, transparent face masks are reusable and can be washed and sanitized, thereby reducing the amount of waste generated. This applies to both the production waste that is generated and the disposal waste that it consequently brings. This can have a significant impact on the environment as the use of traditional masks has led to a significant increase in the amount of medical waste generated.

In addition, transparent face masks are made of durable materials, such as polycarbonate or PETG, that are designed to last longer than traditional masks. This reduces the need for frequent replacements and results in less waste. “A 2020 study found that 56 billion face masks wound up in oceans in the first year of the pandemic, amounting to 5,500 tons of plastic pollution. This data is troubling, considering that the plastic used in face masks can remain in the environment for up to 450 years” (Makati Medical Center, 2022)

Moreover, transparent face masks have become increasingly popular in the market due to their reusability and longer lifespan, leading to the development of new eco-friendly materials that can be used for their production. These materials can include biodegradable plastics, recycled plastics, and other sustainable materials.

In conclusion, the use of transparent face masks can have a significant positive impact on the environment by reducing the amount of waste generated and promoting the use of sustainable materials. By choosing reusable and eco-friendly transparent face masks, we can play a part in protecting the planet while still keeping ourselves and others safe from harm and sickness.
